Subject Description: | Students will undertake a series of studio-based assignments in design based on aspects of residential development and urban design and planning, including: development of an understanding of various approaches to the design of residential developments, with particular regard to technical and environmental constraints, functional and economic parameters, principles of urban design and urban planning, human values expressed in housing, and the cultural meanings of dwelling; development of techniques for analysing built context, and using this analysis to inform the design process; an appreciation of architectural design theory and developed the necessary analytical skills for critically adapting design theory to design practice; detailed design development and construction documentation of a residential development project, and compile a project report that describes and illustrates the technical aspects of the design proposal; an appreciation of a broad range of theory relevant to architecture and urban design and are able to apply this theory in the analysis of design and in the development of design tactics; development of architectural tectonic and technical skills commensurate with those required to undertake Architectural Design and Practice 5. | |
Assessment: | Assessment will be based on two major projects and a review of a portfolio of all assignments set during the semester. Projects, studio tests, exercises, reports, and tutorial presentations, to the equivalent of 15,000 words. | |
