702-217 History of Building Construction

702-138 Construction Technology 1B (or an equivalent introductory subject in the field of structural principles in building)

Two lectures and one tutorial a week throughout one semester or the equivalent time in field trips

Subject Description:

A historical study of the use of materials and the means of constructing buildings from antiquity to the twentieth century, including consideration of the evolution of structural engineering, labour conditions, the decoration of buildings and methods of investigation of buildings. Student will develop skills in information gathering and critical synthesis, essay and report writing, and visual and oral presentation techniques required for the independent interpretation of these insights.

Assessment:

An essay, class paper, reports and exercises (drawn or written) to the equivalent of not more than 5000 words, and one 90 minute examination.
