791-221 Australian Fauna

Objectives:

This subject is designed to enable the student to:

  • have an understanding of the recording and labelling of collected specimens;

  • understand the system of classification and nomenclature of the Australian invertebrate and vertebrate fauna;

  • understand the taxonomic differences between the major animal groups, and to have a particular understanding of the insects, avifauna, eutherians, marsupials and monotremes;

  • understand the general, behavioural and reproductive biology of the Australian fauna.

Content:

Animal diversity; general, behavioural and reproductive biology of invertebrate and vertebrate fauna; the classification and nomenclature of the Australian invertebrate and vertebrate fauna, with particular emphasis on the insects, avifauna and mammals, and the collection of animal specimens.

Assessment:

2 x two hour examinations (25% each); two hour identification practical test (25%); animal collection (25%)
