212-311/411 Animal Management and Production

Note:

This course involves the use of animals in experiments. Students should be aware that these experiments are an essential part of the course and exemption from this component is not possible.

24 hours of lectures and 36 hours of practical work

Objectives:

Students should be familiar with all major animal production systems. They should be able to critically analyse these systems.

On completion of this subject, students should be: aware of all the major inputs into an animal production system; aware of the products of animal production systems and product quality; able to understand the effects of changes in inputs and/or outputs on the efficiency of the production system; capable of analysing a production system; aware of alternative production systems; capable of surveying an animal industry.

Content:

Size, distribution and value of each animal industry. Breed selection and genetic improvement in animal production. Practical feeding of breeding and growing animals. Optimisation of reproductive output in animal industries. Environmental effects and use of buildings in animal production. Management regimes to maintain animal health. Maximisation of product quality. Analysis of production systems and consideration of alternatives. Marketing and markets.

Assessment:

A 3-hour end-of-semester written examination; two written assignments (up to 2500 words each) related to the practical work.
