211-440 Forest Biotechnology and Tree Breeding

Objectives:

On completion of the subject students should have an appreciation of the basic principles and methodology of applied tree breeding, population improvement, and the potential uses of biotechnology.

Content:

Basic quantitative genetics and biotechnology. Methods, concepts and case studies in tree breeding for increased yield and quality. Seed production, vegetative propagation and clonal forestry. Inbreeding and its management, natural variation in forest trees and provenance testing. Genetic modification of reproductive systems, disease and pest resistance. Direct and indirect selection, information from relatives, multi-trait selection indices, marker assisted selection.

Assessment:

One 3-hour written examination at the end of the semester, one written assignment of 2500 words and short written problem sets during the semester.
