211-360 Biometry 2

12 hours of lectures and 18 hours of practical work over one semester

Objectives:

The object of this unit is to develop in students a familiarity with a number of approaches to experimental design, analysis of experimental data, and data exploration.

On completion of this subject, students should be: capable of designing efficient experiments and of performing analyses common in forestry research; able to distinguish between alternative statistical approaches, and to apply appropriate analyses for different experimental designs; familiar with standard numerical methods used in classification, ecology, systematics and GIS.

Content:

Introduction to matrix algebra, including multiplication, eigenvectors and values, reducibility; Multiple regression, ANOVA and ANCOVA; experimental design; classification and ordination for ecology, systematics, vegetation mapping and GIS.

Assessment:

One 2-hour written examination at the end of the semester and practical assignments throughout the semester.
