211-359 Fire Management

Objectives:

On completing this subject, students should: be competent in basic fire-weather forecasting; understand the principles of fire behaviour and the bases of fire danger ratings; understand the principles of fire protection; have skills in planning and selecting appropriate fire-protection strategies; understand the role and impact of fire in forest ecosystems; have a knowledge of fire law.

Content:

Fire weather forecasting: climatic zones; weather systems; temperature, moisture, and wind effects. Fire behaviour: combustion processes and forest fuels; effects of fuel, weather and topography on fire behaviour, fire danger rating. Fire control: principles of hazard reduction and suppression strategies, fire law; objectives and cost-effective of different fire-control strategies, logistics and operational considerations. Fire ecology: the effects of high and low intensity fires; fire in forest management.

Assessment:

A 3-hour written examination at the end of the semester and practical assignments throughout the semester.
