211-301 Landscape Ecology & Management

12 hours of lectures and 18 hours of practical work

Objectives:

At the end of this course students should: understand the concepts of structure, function and change in landscape ecology and be aware of methods for monitoring and assessing landscape conditions over time; understand concepts of ecologically sustainable development and their implications for forest management in Australia; understand the concepts and roles of economic and other analytical tools fro evaluating alternative resource management regimes.

Content:

Principles of landscape ecology and sustainable forest management. Status, monitoring and trends in selected landscape indicators in Australia. Modelling growth and yield in even-aged and uneven-aged forests. Introduction to computerised management information and decision-support systems.

Assessment:

One 2-hour written examination at the end of the semester and assignments and practical work during the course.
