211-256 Cell Biology and Physiology

Objectives:

On completion of this subject, students should have an understanding of the variety of molecules that constitute plant tissue; the principles of plant metabolism including respiration, photosynthesis and secondary metabolism; and the basic physiological processes that determine the growth and productivity of trees.

Content:

The macromolecules of plant cells; membranes and permeability; photosynthesis and respiration; nitrogen metabolism; lignin biosynthesis; water relations of whole plants, transpiration, stomatal physiology; biomass assimilation, translocation and energy transformation; ion uptake and mineral nutrition; introduction to forest biotechnology.

Assessment:

One 3-hour written examination at the end of the semester. Marks will also be given for assignments and practical work.
