Year 4 Veterinary Science.

Objectives:
Students completing this subject should:
- be familiar with the nature of the horse industry, routine horse management and the special characteristics of equine veterinary practice;
- possess the essential information on the more common equine diseases and be able to learn further in this area.
- be able to initiate a logical equine clinical investigation based on presenting signs and be able to arrive at a reasonable diagnosis and treatment regime; and
- be able to devise appropriate equine disease prevention programs
Content:
Aspects of the equine industry (including terminology, insurance and purchase examinations, identification of horses and veterinary roles at equine events); equine stud farm management and breeding; the differential diagnoses of various presenting signs in the horse together with their clinical and laboratory investigation and the appropriate treatment/management of the disorders encountered; special considerations for the neonatal foal.
Assessment:
A 3-hour written examination and two 20-minute oral examinations in the examination term of the final clinical year.
