Year 4 Veterinary Science.

Timetable: Double semester.
Objectives:
Students completing this subject should be able to:
- suggest a possible diagnosis and differential diagnosis from the history, epidemiology, clinical signs and lesions observed in individual sheep, goats or deer, or in flocks or herds of these animals;
- recommend appropriate ancillary laboratory tests, submit a detailed request for a laboratory examination, and interpret the results of any tests or laboratory reports;
- ascertain if the welfare of the animal or herd is being compromised;
- specify appropriate therapy or other course of action;
- provide the owner with a prognosis;
- advise the owner of the appropriate withholding periods for milk or of the animal from slaughter when antibiotics or chemicals are administered or applied;
- recommend measures to control a disease in a flock, herd or other population;
- recommend measures to prevent a disease from occurring;
- prepare a written report for the owner or attendant, or for a referring veterinarian; and
- demonstrate competence in the analysis of records of production, health and reproductive performance.
Content:
Diseases, preventive medicine and production management of sheep, goats, deer and camelids; clinical examination, diagnosis and methods of treatment. Flock and herd management.
Assessment:
A 3-hour written examination and two 20-minute oral examinations in the examination term of the final clinical year.
