Year 3 Veterinary Science.

Objectives:
Students completing this subject should:
- be aware of the importance of clinical signs which indicate a disturbance of structure and function of musculoskeletal system;
- be able to recognise, describe and interpret morphological changes in muscles, tendons, ligaments, bones, joints and associated structures at both the macroscopic and microscopic level;
- have a knowledge of causes of disease in the musculo-skeletal system, and be able to recognise if the disease is expressed locally or as disturbances of whole body function or other organ function;
- understand the principles of patient management for disorders of the musculoskeletal system in terms of indications for particular types of therapy, and the principles of providing a prognosis; and
- be aware of the uses and limitations of ancillary investigations such as electromyography, ultrasonography, radiography, clinical pathology, bacteriology, virology, serology and pathology of biopsy specimens in diagnosis and management.
Content:
Principles of examination of the musculoskeletal system; sample-taking; clinical pathology of bones, joints and muscles. Disorders of joints, tendon, and muscle; fractures.
Assessment:
A 3-hour written examination at the end of the first clinical year
