Year 3 Veterinary Science.
Coordinator: Mr A L Vizard.
Contact: 26 hours of lectures and 39 hours of practical work.
Objectives:
Students completing this subject should:
- be able to give practical advice on the nutrition of domestic animals;
- be able to design an appropriate production system for the beef, dairy, sheep, horse and other animal industries;
- be able to prepare a farm budget, and a partial budget for any proposed change to farm management;
- know how to design an appropriate system for production of laboratory animals;
- be familiar with current computer software for the animal industries, and be able to analyse their strengths and weaknesses;
- be able to analyse an animal production system and diagnose problems through systems analysis and the use of appropriate computer software; and
- have direct experience in problem-solving under real conditions of animal production on farms.
Content:
Principles of animal management and production. Animal management and production systems. Herd and flock data acquisition and records; management, health and production problems; using computers to analyse laboratory and farm animal production; costing and financial performance. Computer models of farm production systems.
Assessment:
A 2 hour written examination and a 20-minute oral examination at the end of the year; practical work assessed continuously throughout the teaching period.
