250-103 Veterinary Biochemistry

Year 1 Veterinary Science.

Coordinator: Dr I D Walker.

Contact: 52 hours of lectures and 35 hours of practical classes.

Content:

Basic structural biochemistry: amino acids, structure and chemistry; proteins, conformation, structure, analytical protein chemistry, enzymes and their kinetic analysis; nucleic acids and protein synthesis, bacterial genetics and antibiotics. Metabolic chemistry: glycolysis, the tricarboxylic acid cycle, oxidative phosphorylation, beta oxidation of lipids, and gluconeogenesis. Advanced topics: molecular biology, molecular genetics of mammalian diseases, lipid soluble vitamins, blood coagulation, the generation of the immune repertoire and the physiological chemistry of the complement system.

Assessment:

A 2-hour written examination on the first forty percent of the syllabus (mid-year) and a 3-hour end-of-year written examination covering the latter sixty percent of the syllabus. Practical work is assessed continuously. A data assessment test (2-hour open book examination) will be made at the end of the practical course. Weighting of assessment components will be advised at the beginning of the year.
