The majority of students who wish to enrol in the Bachelor of Information Systems course will take 615-160, Tool of Analysis, or one of the mathematical sciences subjects listed as alternatives, in their first year. The Department of Mathematics conducts testing for course advice purposes during Orientation Week, and all first-year Bacelor of Information Systems students are encouraged to sit for one of the tests. The Diagnostic Test is the appropriate test for students who have not studied VCE Specialist Mathematics, while those who have studied VCE Specialist Mathematics should consider undertaking the Exemption Test. Students should register for testing at the First-Year Learning Centre, Richard Berry Building, before the start of Orientation Week. Students whose test results are unsatisfactory will be advised to enrol in 618-161, Introductory Mathematics, prior to enrolling in 615-160 (or in 617-142 or 619-100). Those whose test results are satisfactory may enrol in one of 615-160, 617-141 or 619-100 in Semester 1, and may consider taking additional Mathematics subjects, such as 618-141 or 618-151 (618-141 preferred for students planning subsequent studies in Mathematics). In particular, students who perform satisfactorily on the Exemption Test will be eligible to enrol directly in 618-121 Mathematics 1A in first semester, in addition to one of the subjects 615-160, 617-141, 618-131, or 619-100, leading to a number of attractive subsequent selections in Mathematics.
Note on subject numbering. Each Information Systems subject has been assigned a six-digit number of the form 615-YTS. Y is the year in which the subject is normally taken. S indicates the semester in which the subject is generally begun, 0 - 4 for the first semester and 5 - 9 for the second semester. T indicates the general topic area covered by the subject: 0 for accounting, 2 for information systems, 3 for information technology, 4 for software and systems development, 5 for management, 6 for analytical tools, and 7 for projects.
The following Information Systems subjects may be taken by BSc students for Science credit: 615-245, 615-320, 615-325, 615-335, 615-345, 615-370.
