655-350 Ophthalmic Prosthetics

Coordinator: Mr Richard G Lindsay.

Prerequisite: Optical Systems 655-101 and Optical Design and Metrology 655-210.

Corequisite: Functional Disorders of Vision 655-330.

Contact: 52 lectures (two a week), 26 hours practical classes in the first semester and 13 tutorials in the second semester.

Timetable: Double semester.

Objectives:

On completion of this subject, students will:

Content:

Properties of ophthalmic materials. Optics of ophthalmic lenses; lens effectivity, transposition, obliquely crossed cylinders, high power lens forms and anisometropia. Principles of aberration control of spectacle lenses, best form and aspheric lenses. Absorptive lenses. Design of multifocals and low vision aids. Aniseikonia and eikonic corrections. Optics of contact lenses. Ophthalmic dispensing techniques; tolerances and prescription verification.

Assessment:

A practical examination in ophthalmic dispensing at the end of the first semester; a 3-hour end-of-year written examination. Students must complete assignments and the practical examination satisfactorily.
