Prerequisite: No less than 50 points of 300-level Zoology, or an equivalent level of studies. Acceptance is subject to the availability of suitable topics and supervisors, and placement is competitive. Students should discuss their interests with the Honours Coordinator or Head of Department. Prerequisites may be waived at the discretion of the Head of Department.
Objectives:
The Honours program in Zoology is designed to:
- provide an introduction to the process and practice of zoological research;
- enable the acquisition of current research skills in specific areas;
- enhance the understanding of biological sciences across a wide area;
- encourage development of the abilities to think critically and independently, to evaluate information and to analyse biological data;
- improve oral and written communication skills.
Content:
Subject 654-497 comprises:
- a lecture series (with follow-up tutorials) on the design of experiments in biology and the statistical analysis of biological data;
- a lecture series on communication skills in biology with emphasis on scientific writing and spoken presentations;
- lectures and seminars in the areas of physiology, reproductive and developmental biology, ecology, behaviour, conservation biology and evolutionary biology;
- an essay (of no more than 2,000 words) on a nominated topic in Zoology;
- an additional written assignment (research grant application, review or additional essay) of no more than 2,000 words.
Assessment:
- 1st essay (7.5% of the total result for Honours as a whole)
- 2nd written assignment (7.5% of the total result for Honours as a whole)
- A seminar presentation of 15 minutes with a 5-minute discussion (5% of the total result for Honours as a whole)
- To complete the Honours program in Zoology, students must obtain passes of 65% or better in both 654-496 and 654-497.
