Note: Experiments involving the use of animals are an essential part of this subject; exemption is not possible. Students may not gain credit for both 654-306 and 654-311.

Prerequisite: This subject has a quota, and a high level of performance in 200-level subjects is required for selection. Selection into this subject must be negotiated with the Head of Department.
Corequisite: 300-level Zoology subjects totalling at least 50 points
Contact: 130 hours practical work and participation in research-group planning, discussion and literature-evaluation meetings.
Timetable: First or second semester
Objectives:
By the end of this unit students should:
- have an appreciation of the nature and requirements of research in animal biology
- have developed an appreciation of the skills necessary to plan and conduct research in animal biology
- have had some experience of carrying out original research
- have learnt the skills of critical analysis of current research literature to identify and evaluate research questions
Content:
Involvement in the planning, execution and evaluation of an original investigation in modern animal biology.
Assessment:
A written report of up to 5,000 words by the end of second semester, and an oral report (15 minutes duration).
