625-211 Mineralogy and Igneous Petrology

Note: Special requirements: Geological hammer, hand lens and compass. Consult the departmental notice board for dates and charges for excursions, accommodation and food, which will be fixed as early as possible in the first semester.

Credit points: 13.5

Prerequisite: Earth Sciences 625-101 and 625-102. At least VCE Chemistry is strongly recommended.

Contact: 26 lectures (two a week), 26 hours practical work (two hours a week), and 4 days field work

On completion of this subject, students should:

Content:

Mineralogy of common rock-forming minerals in thin section and hand specimen; mineral parageneses and textures in igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks; chemical and structural variations in minerals. Melting, transport and crystallisation processes in the formation of igneous rocks; the major groups of igneous rocks; igneous rocks in thin section, hand specimen and in the field.

Assessment:

A 2-hour end-of-semester written examination; a 2-hour practical examination or reports totalling up to 1,500 words; a 5 page field report.
