615-335 Distributed Systems

Credit points: 12.5

Coordinator: To be announced.

Prerequisite: 615-230 (Concepts in Database and Telecommunications) and 615-245 (Systems Analysis and Design); or, with permission of Head of Department, 433-351 (Database Systems) and corequisite 433-353 (Networks and Communications).

Contact: Two one hour lectures and up to ten hours of project work per week.

Timetable: Second semester.

Objectives:

At the completion of this subject, students should have gained, and be able to demonstrate through the completion of a significant project, a firm understanding of the significant issues involved in the design, implementation, and management of distributed systems in organisations.

Content:

Topics may include distributed systems (typical examples, database and application design, reliability and security); client server architectures (design, planning, reliability, security, and performance); distributed systems implementation.

Assessment:

End of semester written examination of up to three hours; individual and group project work. The weighting of the assessment components will be announced at the commencement of the subject.
