Prerequisite: 615-230 (Concepts in Database and Telecommunications)
Contact: Two one hour lectures and up to eight hours of project work per week.
Timetable: First semester.
Objectives:
At the completion of this subject, students should:
- have an in-depth knowledge of the relational database model and be able to write relational database schemas;
- have a working knowledge of some non-relational database models;
- be able to write efficient database queries in Structured Query Language (SQL);
- have knowledge of the different topologies and transmission media commonly used in local area networks and the different types of wide area networks;
- appreciate the function of various network-dependent protocols used with local and wide area networks, and have in-depth knowledge of key aspects of these;
- understand the operation of transport protocols, application support protocols, and application-specific protocols used in network services.
Content:
Topics may include data models, focusing on relational but including network, hierarchical, and possibly others; relational database issues (normalisation, query processing, and optimisation); object-oriented databases (design and query languages); data transmission basics; network connectivity and performance issues; TCP/IP and OSI protocols for open systems.
Assessment:
End of semester written examination of up to three hours project work. Weighting of the assessment components will be announced at the commencement of the subject.
