Note: This subject or 433-142 (Computing Fundamentals B) is required for the completion of the BIS. Students may not gain credit for both this subject and 433-142.

Prerequisite: 615-145 (Concepts in Software Development I)
Contact: Three one hour lectures, a one hour tutorial, and two hours of laboratory work per week.
Timetable: First semester.
Objectives:
At the completion of this subject, students should:
- be familiar with the use of common high-level language constructs;
- be familiar with several procedural languages and some object-oriented languages;
- be able to select an appropriate language for a given problem;
- have a basic understanding of languages used for distributed computing;
- be able to design, write, test, and debug non-trivial programs;
- be able to use a range of software development tools.
Content:
Survey of major programming paradigms, including those for parallel and distributed computing. Discussion of the software development life cycle and the tools available to facilitate software development.
Assessment:
Mid-semester and end-of-semester written examinations of up to two hours each; individual projects and group projects taking approximately 25 hours together. The weighting of the assessment components will be announced at the commencement of the subject.
