Objectives:
At the completion of this subject, students should:
- understand the principles of database systems, including the relational and network models and associated query languages;
- be familiar with the role of a database administrator;
- understand the fundamentals of data communication and computer networks;
- understand the modes of operation and the interface standards and protocols associated with different types of data networks;
- be aware of the range of international standard protocols which achieve open systems interconnection;
- understand the options organisations have for building or purchasing telecommunications services.
Content:
Topics may include data models (relational, network, hierarchical, and object-oriented), database design, and commercial query languages including Structured Query Language (SQL). Database administration (security, integrity, and concurrency). Data transmission (synchronous and asynchronous transmission, error detection and correction, and compression). Local and wide area networks (architectures, protocols, and issues). Organisational options (data and telecommunications architectures, in-house networks, outsourcing).
