Objectives:
Students should gain:
- a knowledge of the ecology of Australian plants and plant communities;
- an understanding of the ecosystem concept, and the structure and physiology of ecosystems;
- an understanding of basic concepts of population and community ecology
- an understanding of local and global environmental issues.
Content:
Australian plant communities, plant population dynamics, plant productivity, plants and fire, plants and aridity, plant-animal interactions. Issues such as greenhouse, salinity, dieback, logging, fires.
Assessment:
One 3-hour written examination at the end of the subject; a report of 2,000 words maximum on the excursion.
