Note: Must be taken concurrently with 553-496 Medicine (RMH & WH) Research project (80 points).
Credit points: 100 in total
Coordinator: Associate Professor Peter Gibson
Prerequisite: Completion of third course in Science subjects relevant to medical research (eg: Anatomy, Biochemistry, Genetics, Microbiology, Pathology, Pharmacology, Physiology and Zoology).
Objectives:
- to give a broad exposure to approaches taken and methods used in biomedical research;
- to understand how basic science subdivisions (such as physiology, anatomy, genetics, epidemiology, biochemistry) merge in medical research;
- to acquire skills in a specific area of biomedical research;
- to develop skills in critical analysis of experimental data, published works and oral presentations;
- to develop skills in the communication of scientific ideas and results by the written word and by oral presentation.
Content:
- Lecture/Seminar series on a broad range of topics relevant to biomedical research during March, April and May.
- Attendance at Weekly Department Research Seminars.
- Active participation in Research Group meetings.
Assessment:
Hurdle requirements
- Oral presentation of critiques of two journal articles and two presentations on the research project at Research Group meetings.
Assessed items
- 3 hour short answer examination based upon the Lecture Series in June (20% of the total mark for Honours as a whole).
