543-497 Medicine Advanced Coursework (30 Points)

Note: Must be taken concurrently with 543-496 Medicine Research Project (70 points).

Credit points: 100

Prerequisite: A good undergraduate degree in subjects relevant to biomedical sciences, including but not restricted to physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, genetics, cell biology and epidemiology.

Objectives:

The Honours course in the Department of Medicine (Austin & Repatriation Medical Centre) is designed to:

Content:

Lectures and seminars describing research by members of the Department and invited outside speakers on selected topics in the cardiovascular, endocrine, renal and gastrointestinal systems, drug treatment and therapeutics.

Experimental design and statistical analysis, receptor biology, neurosciences, biology of hormones and cardiovascular biology. Additional practical lectures on ethics, library resources, laboratory safety, writing and presentation skills and computer skills will be given.

A written review and talk summarising the laboratory techniques and literature relevant to the research project.

An assessment based on the lecture series.

Assessment:

To successfully complete the Honours program in Medicine (Austin & Repatriation Medical Centre) students must obtain an overall grade of 65%.
