Prerequisite: No less than 50 points of 300-level Physiology, or an equivalent level of studies. Acceptance is subject to the availability of suitable topics and supervisors, and placement is competitive. Students should discuss their interests with the Honours Coordinator or Head of Department. Prerequisites may be waived at the discretion of the Head of Department.
Objectives:
The Honours program in Physiology is designed to:
- provide an introduction to the process and practice of physiological research;
- enhance understanding of biological and medical sciences across a wide area
- strongly develop the ability to critically analyse and independently evaluate experimental data
- to develop oral and written communication skills to levels expected of a practising scientist
- to enhance the process of life-long independent learning
Content:
Subject 536-497 comprises:
- seminars in a broad range of medical and biological sciences, lectures and workshops in the areas of experimental design and statistical analysis, writing skills and seminar technique
- an essay of no more than 6,000 words on a nominated topic in Physiology, an additional written assignment of no more than 1,500 words
- a talk justifying th aims and methods of the research project during the year, a seminar on the research project results at the end of the year
Assessment:
Hurdle Requirements:
- Attendance at Departmental lectures and seminars
- Delivery of a talk summarising the major findings of the physiology literature review (12 minute presentation with a 6 minute discussion).
Assessed Items:
- Literature background essay (15% of the total mark for Honours)
- Literature assignment (5% of the total mark for Honours)
- Seminar presentations (2) of 12 minutes with a 6 minute discussion in the middle and at the end of the year (each 5% of the total mark for Honours)
- Written assignment on analytical techniques and data analysis (10% of the total mark for Honours)
To successfully complete the Honours program in Physiology, students must obtain passes of 65% or better in both 536-496 and 536-497.
