536-307 Physiology of Human Nutrition

Content:

Topics covered in nutrition in normal physiology include: water, minerals, electrolytes, lipid digestion, absorption and turnover, dietary carbohydrate, fibre, bone metabolism. Topics covered in nutrition related to disease include: hypertension, plasma lipoproteins, hyperlipidemia, atheroscelorosis, diabetes, and osteoporosis. Course work includes 2 practical research projects, seminar and review of the literature. The research projects conducted are: 1) body composition related to energy balance, 2) manipulation of dietary fat and electrolyte intake and the effect on blood pressure and blood lipids.

Assessment:

One 3 hr open book exam, reports of practical research projects (2 x 1,500 words [approx]); 8 x 1-page assignments on seminar material: seminar contributions and review of literature on individual topic (1 x 1,500 words [approx]).
