Prerequisite: Enrolment into the second year of the Optometry course.
Contact: 78 lectures (3 a week, all year) and 39 hours practical work and workshops (3 hours a week),

Objectives:
Students completing this subject should:Comprehend:
- the properties characterising all living cells;
- characters unique to special cell types.
Have gained:
- an understanding of the human body;
- a conceptual and experimental understanding of body systems and then control at the cellular and systemic levels.
Content:
Cellular physiology: properties characterising all living cells; characters unique to special cell types such as neurones and muscle fibres. Systemic physiology; consideration of activity of different tissues and organs subserving the various coordinated functions of the human body (e. g. the cardiovascular, respiratory and nervous system); functions of the human body. Practical work will include experimental design to test physiological concepts. Experiments will illustrate selected lecture material. Experiments involving the use of animals are essential to this subject; exemption is not possible.
Assessment:
Written laboratory reports of up to 6 pages each, a 2 hour written examination at the end of first semester, and a 3 hour end of year examination. The final examination will be based on the whole year's work.
