Prerequisite: Admission to Fourth Year Pharmacology is open to students who have completed a major or co-major in Pharmacology and attained Faculty Honours at 300 level, as well as satisfied normal Faculty rules.
Objectives:
The Honours course in Pharmacology aims to:
- introduce students to basic research by completing a project within a research laboratory in the Department ( or affiliated Department);
- further students' pharmacological knowledge through a course of advanced lectures;
- introduce students to the current research literature in various specialised fields, and;
- allow students to develop their presentation skills.
By the end of the Honours Year, the Honours student should have developed a keen sense of research skills including statistical knowledge and application, how to read and critically analyse a scientific paper, how to communicate by short oral presentations, how to develop a line of research through hypothesis testing, experimental design and practical experimentation, how to write a 20 page thesis on the research topic developed with supervision and how to present and defend the research work through a ten minute presentation. The year will be both stimulating and exacting - to encourage the love of research and creativity with rigour and extend Pharmacological knowledge on a broad theme via advanced lectures from established research scientists. The course should equip the student with the skills necessary for embarking on further research in a PhD course and for moving into the Pharmaceutical Industry or Government authorities.
