Prerequisite: Enrolment in the third year of the Optometry course
Contact: 18 lectures (two a week for nine weeks), eight hours practicals (two 4-hour sessions) and four 1-hour tutorials
Timetable: Second semester
Objectives:
By the end of the teaching program in Ocular Pharmacology the optometry student should:Comprehend:
- the various ways drugs act on the body, with a specific emphasis on drugs used in optometry and generally on the eye;
- the way drugs are absorbed, distributed, metabolized and eliminated, with a specific emphasis on mechanisms involving the eye;
- therapeutic uses of drugs on the eye; licit and illicit social use of drugs and implications for the eye;
Have developed:
- skills in reading the literature and keeping up to date on ocular pharmacology and toxicology;
- an ability to communicate with patients and health professionals about pharmacology and therapeutics;
Appreciate:
- the importance of drug action in the eye; the special needs of optometry patients undergoing drug therapy.
Content:
Autonomic innervation of the eye; drugs used in ocular conditions; local anaesthetics; anti-inflammatory drugs; anti-histamines; chemotherapy of ocular infection; miotics, mydriatics and cycloplegics; drug hypersensitivity; treatment of glaucoma; ocular toxicology of domestic and industrial chemicals; administration of drugs to the eye; absorption and penetration through the cornea; vehicles for topical application of drugs to the eye; preservatives; thickeners; drug regulations.
Assessment:
A 2-hour end-of-semester written examination. An oral examination may be held.
