534-202 Pharmacology (Practical)

Note:

  1. Special requirement: Laboratory coat
  2. Experiments involving the use of animals are an essential part of this subject; exemption is not possible.

Pre/Corequisite: Prequisites: Chemistry 610-120, 610-140, 610-160, Biology 600-141 and 600-142 (Before 1996: 600-101 Biology); exemption may be considered in special cases (e. g. students taking Psychology in first year). Corequisite: Pharmacology 534-201

Contact: 39 hours practical work (one 3-hour session a week)

Content:

Basic concepts of Pharmacology: dose/response relationship; competitive antagonism, non-competitive and functional antagonism; partial agonists and spare receptors; pharmacodynamic modelling; antagonism of responses to nerve stimulation; toxicology. Human Pharmacology: pharmacodynamics and pharmaco-kinetics of ethanol; pharmacokinetic modelling; coronary vasodilators; ß -adrenoceptor antagonists; drug profile analysis.

Assessment:

Continuous assessment throughout the subject; a 1-hour computer based practical examination
