Prerequisite: Any student who has obtained a Faculty Honours in biological science may apply.
Aims: The Science Honours course in the Department of Pathology aims to provide an environment where students can learn to practice high standard science :
1. By offering experimental projects which:
2. By providing course work which presents information about important investigative technologies in day-to-day use in research laboratories.
3. By teaching students:
4. By teaching students oral and written communication skills.
Objectives:
By the end of the course students should:
- have developed an understanding of processes involved in scientific investigation;
- understand the principles of hypothesis formulation;
- be able to design experiments to test hypotheses;
- have experience with and understanding of several different experimental laboratory techniques;
- have sufficient understanding of different laboratory techniques that they can successfully analyse unseen data generated from these techniques;
- be familiar with statistical analysis such that they can choose appropriate tests for their experimental data;
- be able to access and use scientific literature from a wide data-base;
- be able to communicate their experimental findings logically and coherently in both oral and written forms.
Content:
- a series of lectures covering currently available and developing research techniques and statistical data analysis;
- Data assessment exercises using data generated from techniques discussed in the lecture series;
- Presentation of a high quality scientific paper in an area different from the research project, in the form of a seminar
Assessment:
- Data assessment exercises (15%)
- Paper presentation seminar (5%)
