531-303 Cellular Pathology

Prerequisite: General Pathology 531-301 or 531-302; Biochemistry and Molecular Biology 521-201 and 521-202*

• Students should note that although these prerequisites are considered essential, interested applicants without these requirements should apply and will be considered on their merits.

Recommended: Pathology 531-304; Biochemistry and Molecular Biology 521-301; Microbiology 526-304

Contact: 39 hours lecture/seminars and 120 hours practical (ten a week for 12 weeks)

Timetable: Second semester only

Objectives:

Students completing this subject should:

• learn to appreciate the spectrum of cellular responses to injury and neoplasia, particularly relating to the response of organ systems to damaging events;
• prepare the student to assimilate the knowledge gained from the Molecular Pathology course (531-304);
• participate actively in lecture/seminar sessions and will, under supervision, carry out one practical project in Departmental or Hospital Pathology research laboratories. A list of projects from which students can choose, will be issued during Semester 1. Every effort to accommodate student preference will be made but final allocation will rest with the Department.

Content:

One project chosen from areas which include: neuropathology, forensic pathology, ophthalmic pathology, immunopathology, transplantation, toxicology, oncology, vascular pathology, virology, renal pathology, liver pathology, haematology.

Assessment:

Practical laboratory work, including work records; seminar presentation; 2000-word project reports.
