516-497 Anatomy Advanced Coursework (25 Points)

Note: Must be taken concurrently with 516-496 Anatomy Research Project (75 Points).

Credit points: 100 in total

Prerequisite: Anatomy and Cell Biology 516-201, 516-202, 516-204, 516-207 or 606-205 and 606-206, plus subjects in Physiology or Biochemistry, one or more 300-level Anatomy and Cell Biology subjects or equivalent studies in an appropriate field of biological sciences. These requirements may be waived by the Head of Department in special circumstances. See also Faculty requirements. Students considering enrolling for the Honours program in Anatomy and Cell biology should discuss their plans with a senior member of staff in the area of their special interest, or with the co-ordinator.

Objectives:

The Honours program in Anatomy and Cell Biology is designed to:

• provide an introduction to advanced biomedical research in molecular, cell and systems biology
• enable the acquisition of current research skills in specific areas;
• encourage the development of the abilities to think both independently and critically through the continual analysis and evaluation of experimental data;
• improve oral and written communication skills.

Content:

• lectures and seminars covering a wide range of biomedical research.
• lectures and workshops in areas such as animal welfare, library resources, experimental design and statistical analysis, writing skills and seminar preparation.

Assessment:

Hurdle Requirements:

• Attendance at lectures, workshops and seminars.

Assessed Items:

• A literature review (no more than 3,000 words) which forms the basis of the introduction to the thesis (5% of the total mark)
• A journal review (5% of the total mark)
• An exam in statistics (5% of the total mark)
• An oral defence of the thesis (10% of the total mark)
