516-301 Practical Cell Biology

Note: Experiments involving the use of animals are an essential part of this subject; exemption is not possible.

Credit points: 16.0

Prerequisite: Anatomy and Cell Biology 516-201; 606-206/216 Cell Biology II or 521-201 Principles of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in second year recommended.

Contact: 26 lectures (two a week) and 39 hours practical work

Timetable: First semester

Objectives:

This subject aims to provide a theoretical background and practical experience in a variety of techniques commonly used in studying cell biology. Upon completion of this subject students should:

Content:

Light microscopy: tissue processing for light microscopy, sectioning and staining, immunohistochemistry, autoradiography, fluorescence microscopy, phase contrast microscopy, photographic techniques. Electron microscopy: tissue processing for electron microscopy, transmission and scanning electron microscopy. Cell and tissue culture. Quantitative morphology: morphometry, stereology.

Assessment:

A 2-hour end-of-semester written examination, practical work during the semester, and a 30-minute practical examination in the last week of the semester
