Note: Must be taken concurrently with 511-496 Oral Biology Research Project (80 points).

Prerequisite: Completion of third year course in Science subjects relevant to dental research (eg. Biochemistry, Microbiology, Pathology, Physiology, Pharmacology). Acceptance is subject to the availability of suitable research projects and supervisors, the placement is competitive. Students should discuss their research interests with the Honours co-ordinator (Professor E. C. Reynolds, School of Dental Science). Prerequisites may be waived at the discretion of the Head of the School.
Objectives:
By the end of the honours year the student should have:
- acquired advanced knowledge in certain aspects of oral biology
- designed and executed a research project
- developed the ability to define and solve problems in scientific research and to critically evaluate research data
- developed the ability to critically evaluate the scientific literature
- acquired advanced oral and written communication skills through the presentation of seminars and the preparation of a research thesis
Content:
Subject 511-497 comprises:-
- lectures and seminars on selected topics of advanced oral biology including oral molecular biology, oral microbiology, growth and development, oral biochemistry, biomaterials and biostatistics
- lectures or workshops on the critical analysis of a scientific paper, library resources, research design and writing and communication skills
- participation in the School's (monthly) and Research Unit's (weekly) research seminars
- an oral presentation of the aims and methods of the research project during the year and a seminar to the School on the research project at the end of the year.
- an essay of not more than 2,000 words on a selected topic of oral biology
- an additional written assignment (review or essay) of not more than 2,000 words
Assessment:
Hurdle requirements:
- attendance at no less than 75% of lectures, workshops and seminars
- presentation of aims and methods of research project, through the year (15 minutes presentation and 5 minutes discussion)
Assessed Items:
- First essay (7.5% of the total mark for Honours as a whole)
- Second written assignment (7.5% of the total mark for Honours as a whole)
- Seminar presentation of 25 minutes (with a 5 minute discussion) at the end of the year (5% of the total mark for Honours as a whole)
To successfully complete the Honours program in Oral Biology students must obtain passes of 65% or better in both 511-496 and 511-497.
