Prerequisite: Any one of the following: 121-213/313 Plants, People and Environment; 606-204 Plant Ecology; 654-204/214 Animal Ecology or the permission of the Subject Coordinators.

Contact: 39 lectures (3 per week) and 39 hours of laboratories (3 hours per week)

Content:

Concepts in plant and animal biogeography; island biogeography; succession theory; diversity theory; natural disturbance regimes and the dynamics of communities and populations. Applications to: island floras and faunas; nature reserves; fire ecology and management; forest ecosystems. Anthropogenic disturbance; landscape ecology; restoration ecology.

Assessment:

One 2-hour final examination (60% of final grade), 13 weekly laboratory exercises (30% of final grade), seminar work (10% of final grade).
