740-385 Music Techniques 3

Year 3 Music.

Prerequisite: 740-264 Music Techniques 2.

Contact: A 1-hour lecture and one 1-hour tutorial.

Timetable: first semester

Objectives:

On completion of this subject, students should be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of the principal twentieth-century techniques, compose short pieces using these techniques, and appreciate the skills and problems of the compositional process.

Content:

Major techniques and compositional models of the 20th century, including serial and post tonal structuring.

Assessment:

Regular practical assignments (60 per cent), class paper (30 per cent), attendance (10 per cent).
