Prerequisite: Two Group A subjects.
Contact: Two hours a week of seminars for one semester in third or fourth year.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be aware of the social and historical significance of the operatic genre through a study of selected works; be familiar with literature relating to the interdisciplinary nature of the genre as well as recent musicological research.
Content:
An examination of some of the issues that relate to the interdisciplinary nature of opera alongside a study of selected works from the operatic genre with particular emphasis on their social and historical significance.
Assessment:
A three hour end-of-semester examination (50 per cent) and an essay of up to 3,000 words which will be presented as a 20-minute class paper during the semester (50 per cent).
