740-379/479 Australian Music Studies 3 - Performers and Performance

Elective Music subject.

Credit points: 10.0

Prerequisite: 740-265 Music in Australian an Introduction.

Contact: One 2-hour seminar per week.

Timetable: First semester

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should have a detailed knowledge of Australian performers and of the development of Australian perofrmance organisations, their role in shaping an Australian cultural identity and resources available for study of Australian music.

Content:

An historical study of performance in Australia at both professional and amateur levels. -This encompasses study of Australian domestic and social music-making, the professionalisation of orchestras, opera companies and chamber groups, their repertoire and reception. -Careers of major figures such as Nellie, Melba, Percy Grainger, Joan Sutherland and Charles Mackerras are discussed in detail.

Assessment:

One essay of 3,000 words (60 per cent); one research project to be presented as a class paper (40 per cent).
