740-367 Advanced Keyboard Skills 1

Elective Music subject.

Credit points: 10.0

Coordinator: Dr I Holtham.

Prerequisite: 740-136 Practical Study 1

Contact: A 2-hour weekly group lesson/seminar in third or fourth year.

Timetable: First semester

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should have developed a variety of invaluable keyboard skills including: Keyboard harmony, -reading of figured bass; sight reading and transposition; score reading including the main C clefs; improvisation over harmonic patterns.

Content:

Cadential and triadic formations at the keyboard; harmonisation of simple melodies and an introduction to figured bass; acquisition of fluent and precise sight reading skills; techniques for fluent and reliable transposition; an introduction to the basics of score reading and to the soprano, alto and tenor clefs; -improvisation over harmonic patterns; an introduction to the improvisation of specified forms, stules and musical textures.

Assessment:

Weekly assignments (40 per cent); -end-of-semester practical test (50 per cent); class participation (10 per cent).
