740-364 Applications of Music in Therapy

Elective Music subject.

Credit points: 30.0

Prerequisite: 740-275 Music Therapy Clinical Practicum 1. Quota applies.

Corequisite: 740-389 Music Therapy Clinical Practicum 2.

Contact: A 2-hour lecture and a 1-hour tutorial.

Timetable: Double semester.

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should have gained an appreciation of the historical development of the practice of music therapy; an understanding of the philosophical principles upon which music therapy is based; a knowledge of the theoretical approaches in using music as a therapeutic medium; a comprehensive knowledge of research findings in relation to music therapy methods for children and adults; an understanding of the therapeutic processes in providing treatment and special education services.

Content:

Principles and processes of music therapy. Historical development of the profession. Theoretical basis of the use of music in therapy. The application of music therapy methods in special education and clinical treatment programs. Study of research literature.

Assessment:

Two 1500-word assignments (30 per cent); two 3-hour examinations, one at the end of each semester (70 per cent).
