740-355 Group Music Resources and Ensemble B

Elective Music subject.

Credit points: 20.0

Prerequisite: Group Music Resources and Ensemble A

Contact: Two hours per week group instruction for a double semester; up to four hours per week ensemble rehearsal for one semester.

Objectives:

By the end of the year, students will be able to demonstrate basic playing, maintenance and tuning techniques on at least one instrument from the brass family and on the standard percussion instruments, and will have acquired skills relevant to improvisation and ensemble performance in the school setting.

Content:

Half semester each of group study of brass, percussion, guitar, and vocal skills; Improvisation workshop; Participation in the Faculty's ensembles as allocated by the Dean.

Assessment:

Ensemble participation (40 per cent); Seminar projects (25 per cent); Folio (25 per cent); class presentation (10 per cent).

740-355 Women in Music

Elective Music subject.

Prerequisite: Two Group A subjects

Contact: One 2-hour seminar per week for one semester

Timetable: First semester

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should have a detailed knowledge of women composers and musicians and their achievement and an understanding of the application of feminist theories to music.

Content:

A study of European, American and Australian women-composers and their social and cultural context from Hildegard to Henderson, together with a discussion of issues of gender and difference current in the areas of biography, opera criticism and music analysis.
