740-348/448 Technology and Composition

Elective Music subject.

Credit points: 10.0

Coordinator: Dr S Ingham.

Contact: Two hours of lectures and seminars a week for one semester.

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should have acquired basic skills in the use of computers in music notation and composition with MIDI and have identified the major forces and influences in the recent developments in computer music.

Content:

A critical study of the influences of technology on musical thinking and practice including the application of digital computers to solving musical problems; an introduction to music processing software using Finale and music sequencing software using Cubase.

Assessment:

4 projects in notation and sequencing (60 per cent); 1-hour written examination (40 per cent).
