740-330/430 Style Analysis - Romantic Piano Literature

Elective Music subject.

Availability: Offered in alternate years. Not available in 1996.

Credit points: 10.0

Coordinator: Mr D Thornton.

Prerequisite: Two Group A subjects.

Contact: A subject in either third or fourth year consisting of one 2-hour seminar per week for one semester.

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should have developed an understanding of the style of each important composer, and a knowledge of available editions of their music; be able to comment on common editorial shortcomings in many publications; to be able to comment critically and intelligently on performance of relevant works.

Content:

A survey of selected works of the Romantic piano literature, concentrating on questions of style. Aspects of performance practice of the period will also be addressed.

Assessment:

A written assignment of 2000-2,500 words(50 per cent); An aural identification test ( 10 per cent); A 3-hour examination paper (40 per cent).
