740-283 History of Instruments

Elective Music subject.

Prerequisite: 740-136 Practical Study 1.

Contact: A 2-hour seminar per week for one semester.

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to discuss in detail the history of their instrument and should have a critical perspective for the literature and an extensive knowledge of the repertoire of their instrument.

Content:

Origins and development of each student's instrument; survey of its repertoire; overview of the contributions of significant composers.

Assessment:

(1) Class paper (50 per cent) a 30 minute class presentation to be submitted in essay form (2000-3,000 words) within 14 days of class presentation; (2) a 3 hour written examination-(50 per cent).
