Year 2 Music.
Credit points: 20.0
Coordinator: Ms L. Thomson
Prerequisite: 740-141 Music Techniques 1.
Contact: A 1-hour lecture and a 1-hour tutorial a week in second year.
Timetable: Double semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject, students are expected to have learned the function and progression of all diatonic and chromatic chords used in harmonic music to the end of the 19th century and have developed a technique for fluent writing of harmonic and contrapuntal textures in more than 2 parts.
Content:
This subject expands the harmonic and contrapuntal principles to Western music to embrace advanced tonal procedures and the techniques of chromaticism. Students develop further skill at recognising and manipulating harmonic and contrapuntal textures, on paper away from their instruments. As the lectures consider principles of motion and organisation in a cumulative way, attendance at all lectures and tutorials is essential.
Assessment:
Weekly assignments (50 per cent); a 3-hour end-of-year examination (50 per cent). A pass mark must be obtained in each section of the assessment.
