740-227 Composition 1

Year 2 Music.

Credit points: 30.0

Coordinator: Dr B Broadstock, Dr S Ingham.

Prerequisite: Permission of Dean.

Contact: At least 2 hours of seminars, studio work and tutorials and one 2-hour composition seminar a week throughout the year.

Timetable: Double semester.

Objectives:

At the end of the subject students should have developed an approach appropriate to each student's creative goals and identified and established methods and working habits that will be of assistance in achieving those goals; gained experience in working with the basic materials of musical composition - pitch, rhythm, texture, timbre, structural methods and notation; become acquainted with recent developments in musical composition, both aesthetic and technical; become familiar with instrumental possibilities (including electronic music equipment) in the realisation of musical ideas.

Content:

8 projects (4 per semester) related to the individual needs of the student, covering areas of compositional philosophy and technique, including electronic and computer music, aural training and directed listening.

Assessment:

Satisfactory completion of 8 projects (80 per cent); performance of at least 2 works composed during the year (10 per cent); participation in seminars, workshops, tutorials and concerts (10 per cent).
