740-142 Music in Society

Year 1 Music.

Credit points: 25.0

Prerequisite: (for non BMus students) Faculty Musicianship Test or 740-139 Introduction to Music 1-2.

Contact: Two lectures and one tutorial.

Timetable: Double semester.

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to stylistically-identify and describe musical scores from many periods and traditions, to undertake basic scholarly work using the bibliographic tools of music, and to discuss in overview the music of several cultures.

Content:

An overview of musical works and ideas in the West and an introduction to the music cultures beyond; critical and research methods basic to the scholarly study of music. Representative works of the major periods are introduced in their social contexts.

Assessment:

(a) Regular listening tests (20 per cent); (b) written projects to a total of 4,000 words (20 per cent); (c) end-of-year examination (60 per cent).
